Broadcom's CFO said on the record it may write modest guarantees so OpenAI and Anthropic can pay for what they ordered. Europe's gas storage is at a 15-year low into winter. Washington filed a brief backing OpenAI's right to train on copyrighted work.

$21.7 billion.
That is what Broadcom (AVGO) expects to sell in AI chips next quarter, up 236% on a year ago. Two customers it calls strategic cannot yet fund what they ordered. Broadcom has not said what share of the number they are.
Broadcom beat and the stock fell. AI chip revenue reached $16.7 billion for the quarter.
Then the CFO said the part that mattered. Amie Thuener said Broadcom may write modest guarantees so OpenAI and Anthropic can pay.
That is the Nvidia (NVDA) model at a second chipmaker.
Europe's gas tanks are two thirds full, the emptiest for the date in 15 years. Europe bet the war would end first.
Washington filed a brief backing OpenAI on copyright.
Jobs Friday. CPI September 11.
PMD LENS
The September 1 PMD read Nvidia's lease on Anthropic's compute as vendor credit. That was inference from a signed lease. Today Broadcom's CFO says a weaker version of it out loud. May, modest, low risk. Tuesday's structure is today's stated willingness, and the weaker word is the news.

- Broadcom's software line missed consensus again at $8.75 billion. It carries margin while AI carries growth.
- HPE (HPE) beat and then fell after hours. It sells enterprise and sovereign, the opposite trade to Dell (DELL) and its price war.
- Microsoft (MSFT) disclosed Azure revenue for the first time. Azure ran $29.4 billion in the quarter. That trails Amazon (AMZN) and leads Google (GOOGL).
- Snowflake (SNOW) spiked 22% on CoCo, its AI coding agent. CoCo now sits in over 9,100 accounts.
- Elliott built a stake in Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY). Elliott wants the T-Mobile (TMUS) deal dropped for a buyback.
Broadcom Says It May Guarantee Its Own Customers' Spending. That's Two Chipmakers Now.
The number was never the story. AI chips ran $16.7 billion for the quarter, up 221%. Tan guides fiscal 2027 to about $115 billion. Then the CFO explained how two customers who cannot yet pay will pay.
Amie Thuener said Broadcom is "empowering two of our most strategic customers." The aim is to "bridge the gap between their current cash flow" and what they must spend.
The Hedge Inside the Sentence
Her words carry three qualifiers. Broadcom "may provide modest residual value guarantees." She called them contingent liabilities "we view as low risk." May. Modest. Low risk. None carries a figure.
Who Broadcom Is Betting On
The names are the exposure. Two cash-burning private labs with no public filing carry the commitments. Tan expects Anthropic to take another 5 gigawatts in 2027. Ten more follow in 2028. OpenAI's Jalapeno reaches 1.3 gigawatts in 2027. Those rest on rounds that have not closed.
The Guarantee Without a Number
Broadcom books the order in the quarter it takes the risk. Its customers book the ability to pay in a quarter that has not happened. The stock fell on the print, so the tape read the guide rather than the guarantee. Nobody has priced the second half of that trade. A residual-value figure in next week's 10-Q makes it a balance-sheet item.

SIGNAL 1: Europe Bet the War Would End. The Gas Tank Says It Lost.
Europe put off buying winter gas, betting the Iran war would end first. Tanks are two thirds full, the emptiest for the date since 2011.
So Europe bids against Asia. Dutch gas topped 73 euros, its highest since January 2023.
MET Group's Turri: "Europe is heading into winter with its gas tank at a record low."
War now ranks first among the forces pushing bond yields up. The term premium it lifts is the discount rate under every private exit.
The Tank and the Thermometer
This price says traders see the squeeze. They do not see the refill. Europe's only cover left is a warm winter. If storage is under 60% on October 1, this is rationing.
SIGNAL 2: Washington Filed for OpenAI. It Argued Training Is a Competitiveness Question.
The government took a side in who gets to build AI. It filed a 20-page brief for OpenAI in the New York Times (NYT) case.
The brief calls it critical that the country "retain global leadership in artificial intelligence." It quotes an executive order. Training held back by a "misunderstanding of fair use" would hinder "American prosperity."
The state has taken positions across the buildout. Here it takes one in the case law.
The Brief That Isn't a Ruling
Copyright is the largest open question on the labs Broadcom may stand behind. The market prices the brief as cover. It does not price a holding, because none exists. A ruling before year end tells you what that cover was worth.
SIGNAL 3: AI Money Is Buying What AI Cannot Copy.
Venture money is buying sports teams. Josh Kushner and Bob Iger took the record $12.5 billion Lakers deal. Vinod Khosla's group is taking the Seahawks.
Thrive and Khosla Ventures both write AI cheques. A consortium including Jeff Bezos took a Liverpool stake above $7 billion. Barry Diller has a live bid for MGM Resorts (MGM). He wants "real world assets that AI cannot easily replicate."
The same balance sheets fund the disruption and buy what a model cannot copy.
The Self-Written Policy
Diversification is the easy label. This is insurance the risk-holders wrote themselves. AI capital now marks what AI cannot reach. Should a franchise clear the Lakers mark before year end, the hedge is an allocation.
Ticker Revealed: Pre-IPO Access to the "Next Elon Musk" Company
We’ve found The Next Elon Musk… and what we believe to be the next Tesla.
It’s already racked up $26 billion in government contracts.
Peter Thiel just bet $1 Billion on it.
And you can get exposure — pre-IPO — through a 4-letter ticker symbol revealed in this free briefing.
- Read Friday's September 4 jobs print. A soft number pushes the next move out.
- Watch today's Cybercab launch. A slip re-dates every robotaxi model.
- Check what you sell into Canada before September 8. Retaliation hits shelves.
- Track the September 11 CPI. It sets the discount rate under every AI exit.
Capital Discipline
An order book the customer funds differs from one the seller stands behind. One is demand. The other is credit wearing demand's clothes. Most AI models assume demand.
Run the lab-concentration test before September's IC. Take every position whose exit needs AI orders to keep landing. Your companies can name the revenue share tracing to OpenAI or Anthropic. The labs will not. Set that share to zero and re-run the exit year. Lose under two points of IRR and you own end demand. Lose more than five and you own two private balance sheets. In between, cap the position rather than resize it.
Broadcom named the financing. Europe named the squeeze feeding yields. Washington named the state clearing AI's path. The venture funds named the hedge.
Three of the four price off whether the AI buildout keeps its funding. The fourth prices the cost of capital all three borrow at.
The open question is what an unsized contingent liability is worth if orders slow. Friday's September 4 jobs print sets the cost of capital behind it.
