Goldman says hedge funds pulled back from US tech at the biggest pace since the data series began. Alphabet reports Wednesday. BlackRock is selling more than $12 billion of bonds to fund one Texas data center.

THE SETUP

Chip stocks bounced back today.

Markets shrugged at a second Chinese AI model in one week. Turns out one DeepSeek moment per week is the limit.

Oil briefly crossed a key threshold this morning before Iran said it received mediator proposals. Gas crossed $4 a gallon for the first time since the ceasefire.

The Fed is in blackout. Alphabet and Tesla report Wednesday. And the biggest institutional tech selloff in over a decade is the backdrop for all of it.

PMD LENS

Hedge funds cut US tech at a record pace over two months. Retail followed. Both cohorts now aligned out of megacap AI heading into the most important earnings week of the year. Alphabet Wednesday is the first real test of whether the capex thesis holds or quietly starts coming apart.

WHAT MOST WILL MISS
  • Alibaba (BABA) previewed a model it claims trails only Anthropic's Fable 5.
  • Gas prices crossed $4 a gallon today per AAA.
  • Alphabet paid SpaceX (SPCX) nearly $1 billion a month to bridge its own compute shortage.
  • Four big AI spenders added over $1 trillion to combined revenue backlogs since mid-2025.
IN FOCUS

Hedge Funds Set a Record Selling Tech. Alphabet Reports Into That Tape Wednesday.

Goldman Sachs Prime Services said hedge funds were net sellers of US tech in six of the past eight weeks. The cumulative cut was about 10% of market value. Largest such retreat since Goldman started tracking it over a decade ago. Technology was last week's worst performing and most net sold US sector.

Alphabet (GOOGL) climbed Monday after a report it is developing an internal chip called Frozen v2. Engineers project it could serve six to ten times more tokens per unit of power than its newest TPUs. Target deployment is 2028. The project exists because Alphabet has a serious compute shortage that has reportedly forced Google Cloud to turn away customers. That is why it agreed to pay SpaceX nearly $1 billion a month to fill the gap. Building a custom chip to fix your own supply problem is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of how tight things actually are.

The supply contract picture underneath deserves attention. Oracle (ORCL) had $638 billion in remaining performance obligations last quarter. Four major AI spenders added more than $1 trillion to combined revenue backlogs since mid-2025. Micron's (MU) customer agreements are take-or-pay over five years. The same structure existed during the Covid chip shortage. When that shortage became a glut, customers stopped taking. The Bank for International Settlements flagged this month that long-dated contracts may be amplifying overinvestment.

Retail is aligned with hedge funds. Individual investors bought $52 million of Microsoft (MSFT) shares in July versus $194 million into Intel (INTC). Mag 7 is out. Infrastructure is in. Both cohorts rotating the same direction at the same time.

The Wednesday Signal

Alphabet's Q2 cloud backlog rising against steady capex is a relief. Backlog softening against rising capex is a problem. Take-or-pay language on any Q2 call converts the contract fragility from a concern into something the tape has to price immediately.

SIGNALS IN MOTION

SIGNAL 1: Voters Split 49-to-19 Against Government Equity. Trump Is Talking to OpenAI.

A CNBC All-America poll found 49% of voters say government equity in US companies is not appropriate. Only 19% approve. The Trump administration has negotiated 30 deals worth nearly $27 billion. Its Intel stake has grown to roughly $42 billion. It is now in talks with OpenAI about taking a government stake at IPO.

Senate Republicans urged caution. MAGA Republicans split evenly. Opposition fell from 56% in October 2025 to 49% today but the majority still opposes it.

Anthropic is targeting October. Any government equity structure at an OpenAI listing lands as a template directly inside Anthropic's filing window. Federal equity in a frontier AI lab is a different asset class than a standard technology IPO. Institutional buyers know the difference.

The Signal to Watch

A formal pre-IPO government stake in OpenAI before October converts the Intel framework into a frontier-AI-specific state-capital structure that reprices the Anthropic buyer pool before it opens.

SIGNAL 2: BlackRock Is Selling $12 Billion of Bonds for One Texas Data Center.

BlackRock (BLK) is leading a debt sale targeting at least $12 billion for its El Paso data center campus. Meta owns 20% of the project. JPMorgan (JPM) and Morgan Stanley (MS) are running investor calls Wednesday. Bonds price early next week. The deal mirrors the $30 billion package Meta and Blue Owl (OWL) completed last year for its Louisiana facility.

One data center. Twelve billion dollars of bonds. The same week hedge funds are selling US tech at a record pace. The AI buildout is being financed at scale regardless of what positioning says. Whether Alphabet's earnings Wednesday justify that financing is the only question that matters right now.

The Signal to Watch

A second single-site data center bond above $10 billion before Q3 earnings confirms this is now a repeatable financing structure, not a one-off.

SIGNAL 3: Retail Investors Rotated Out of the Mag 7. Hedge Funds Did Too.

Individual investors bought $52 million of Microsoft shares in July. They put $194 million into Intel and $56 million into IREN. Vanda Research said retail is no longer buying the group, they are picking winners. Citadel Securities noted average daily volumes in May and June were more than double the 2024 average.

Both retail and institutional investors rotating in the same direction heading into the most concentrated earnings week of the year. If two or more Mag 7 names guide capex lower next week, the rotation stops being a positioning story and becomes a fundamental one.

The Signal to Watch

Two or more Mag 7 capex guide-downs across the earnings sequence means the rotation was ahead of the fundamentals, not just sentiment.

THE PLAYBOOK

Alphabet's Q2 cloud backlog Wednesday is the first real test. Take-or-pay language on any Q2 call converts supply contract risk to live event. A formal government stake in OpenAI before October reprices the Anthropic buyer pool. Two or more Mag 7 capex guide-downs confirms the rotation had a reason.

CAPITAL DISCIPLINE

Hedge funds set a record selling US tech. Retail is aligned with them. Alphabet reports Wednesday with Frozen v2 as its efficiency bet and a $1 billion monthly SpaceX compute bill as its problem. Trump is talking government equity with OpenAI. BlackRock is placing $12 billion of bonds for one data center. Gas just crossed $4. The Fed is silent. Name the assumption your position depends on. Size it accordingly.

PMD REPOSITION

Record hedge fund tech selling. Alphabet Wednesday. BlackRock's $12 billion data center bond. Trump talking government equity with OpenAI.

Alphabet's cloud backlog, take-or-pay language across Q2 earnings, and a formal OpenAI government stake before October are the three signals that tell you whether the capex thesis holds, whether AI supply contracts are as firm as the backlog numbers suggest, and whether the Anthropic IPO opens against a state-capital template nobody has priced before.
