SpaceX Q2 capex hit $18.4 billion. The bulk went to AI. Musk said SpaceX will now build exclusively on Nvidia. AMD dropped 8% after hours. Michael Burry warned of a "1987-type fall." Jeff Schmid asked whether AI is becoming "too big to fail."

THE NUMBER

Fifteen point eight.

The billions SpaceX (SPCX) spent on AI in Q2 alone, per the WSJ. That is the bulk of $18.4 billion in total capex, and double the prior quarter's AI spend. It is more than twice the quarter's revenue of $7.8 billion. The AI segment posted $2.56 billion in revenue and a $1.26 billion operating loss.

THE SETUP

SpaceX grew revenue 92% in its first public quarter. The spending grew faster.

Musk on the call: "Going forward, we have decided to build exclusively on Nvidia."

AMD (AMD) fell 8% after hours on a record quarter. Michael Burry warned of a possible "1987-type fall" as stocks hit new highs.

Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid asked whether AI is becoming "too big to fail."

PMD LENS

Yesterday afternoon's letter tracked the $46 billion Anthropic combined debt stack. This morning the spending it funds got a price. Up to $45 billion of SpaceX compute over three years. Raised on one side, committed on the other. SpaceX's $15.8 billion is the largest single-quarter figure any company has pinned to AI.

New "AI Fuel" discovered near Grand Canyon

A small drilling crew just punched through to a discovery big enough to meet global electricity demand 140 times over, according to the International Energy Agency...

Right near the Grand Canyon.

See why Google, Berkshire Hathaway and the President of the United States are rushing to grab it >>

WHAT MOST WILL MISS
  • Musk: "To be clear, the $100 billion ARR in December is not a question mark. That's what we would achieve if we basically did nothing."

  • SpaceX total 2025 revenue was below $19 billion.

  • CFO Bret Johnsen: SpaceX contracted $6.7 billion of cloud revenue in this quarter's opening weeks.

  • SpaceX booked a $354 million accrual for "litigation losses that are probable," tied to its Memphis turbines.

  • Situational Awareness told investors it is up 80% this year despite the public-book sale.

IN FOCUS

SpaceX Spent $15.8 Billion on AI in a Single Quarter. Musk Committed Exclusively to Nvidia. AMD Fell 8%.

The Sixfold Bill

SpaceX put $18.4 billion into capex in one quarter. Of that, $15.8 billion went to AI. The AI segment collected $2.56 billion. It lost $1.26 billion earning it. Johnsen's defense was speed: "we're getting less than a one-year payback."

The Nvidia Commitment

Musk ended a two-supplier policy in one sentence. In May he said SpaceX would keep buying both Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD. AMD grew revenue 50% and fell 8% after hours anyway.

Half the chip index has reported, profits are up 144%, and the index still touched a bear market.

The Anthropic Stack

Anthropic pays up to $1.25 billion a month at Colossus 1. Google (GOOGL) runs up to $920 million a month. Reflection AI, up to $150 million a month. Behind it sits yesterday's $46 billion of Anthropic debt, led by Blackstone (BX) and Apollo (APO). The compute deal adds up to $45 billion more. As much as $91 billion sits on one private name before a fall filing.

The Designation Gap

The tape prices the capex as demand made visible, not the segment beneath it, which loses money on what it books. The revenue has signatures. The payback has a quote. Thursday's lockup is the first day holders can act on the difference.

Louis: The "Strawberry Problem" Is Stalling the AI Revolution

Billion-dollar tech investor Louis Navellier calls it "AI's darkest secret." Until AI models solve the "Strawberry Problem," they'll never create new breakthroughs in medicine, energy, or quantum computing. The good news? One company is about to solve the crisis… unleashing a new $100 trillion opportunity.

SIGNALS IN MOTION

SIGNAL 1: Burry Named 1987. The Market Made a High.

Michael Burry warned it is "possible we are near a major top, and possible a 1987-type fall". It landed on the S&P's first record close since June.

His mechanism: "the market going up on falling volatility forces vol-targeting funds to leverage up." Tuesday bent the pattern. The VIX rose with the tape.

He is short the chip ETF (SOXX), Micron (MU), Nvidia, Caterpillar (CAT), Palantir (PLTR), Tesla (TSLA) and Applied Materials (AMAT).

The Two-Way Bid

The price says conviction. The rising VIX says insurance. Leverage built on calm unwinds on noise. A week of the VIX rising with the index converts momentum into structure risk.

SIGNAL 2: Schmid Gave the Buildout a Systemic Label

Kansas City's Jeff Schmid asked on Tuesday: "is this industry becoming another too big to fail?" It is the sharpest AI warning yet from inside the Fed.

Schmid repeated his call for tighter policy the same day, so this is not the rate lane moving. It is about the concentration the letter sized yesterday: one-third of US growth on one buildout. His bank hosts Jackson Hole.

The Vocabulary Shift

September's curve treats the Fed as a rate path. A financial-stability Fed is not in any curve. Supervision needs no vote. A Warsh answer at Jackson Hole converts the question into policy.

SIGNAL 3: The Backer List Was the Concentration

Last Thursday's letter tracked the Situational Awareness forced sale. This morning the WSJ named the backers. Sundheim. The Collisons. Gross and Friedman. Jane Street. $45 billion, run by a 24-year-old with no prior professional investing experience.

Aksia warned clients in March 2025: "hubris leading to risk management issues." The fund's documents set no limits on concentration or leverage.

Sundheim is a major SpaceX holder. Gross and Friedman run AI at Meta (META). The fund holds a multibillion-dollar Anthropic stake.

The Roster Problem

The tape filed this as one fund's mistake. The people who levered the AI thesis also own its assets. A second AI fund hitting margin calls inside 30 days makes it a pattern.

THE PLAYBOOK
  • Tomorrow, the SpaceX lockup expires and the Form 4 window opens.

  • Friday, July payrolls.

  • August 26, the Q2 GDP second estimate.

  • August 27, Jackson Hole. Warsh's chance to answer Schmid.

  • Fall, the Anthropic listing. The test on the debt and compute stack.

  • November, SpaceX's Q3. The next update on the $6.7 billion ramp.

Capital Discipline

A signed receipt on one balance sheet is a burn rate on the other. SpaceX books Anthropic as up to $45 billion of future sales. Anthropic's lenders sit on $46 billion of debt beside it.

Run it before the filing. Take your largest position that leans on an AI counterparty's contracted revenue. Reprice it with each compute deal cut to its cancel notice, not its full term. If it still clears, you own demand. If it needs 36 months, you own credit on a private borrower. Size it like credit.

PMD REPOSITION

The one-third figure explained the whole-economy growth rate. The $46 billion debt stack explained how one company funds the buildout. The $15.8 billion print is the buildout's biggest single-quarter bill yet.

Three tests land by Jackson Hole. Thursday's SpaceX lockup. Friday's payrolls. Whether Warsh answers Schmid.

The open question is no longer whether AI capex converts to return. It is whether as much as $91 billion stacked on one private name clears at the public layer.
