FOMC minutes land Wednesday and could confirm the hawks were always close. The August flash PMI on Friday is the first real read on the economy this month. Retailers from Walmart to Target test the split consumer. Housing data fills the front half of the week.

MARKET PULSE

Last week named six threads. This week sets up the final stretch into Jackson Hole.

July CPI came in cool, but the bond market held long yields high and treated the soft print as noise. The FOMC minutes land Wednesday and will show how close the hawks came to a hike in July. CoreWeave (CRWV) and Super Micro (SMCI) split the AI trade into the borrower and the builder, and the builder looked steadier. Oil kept swinging on Hormuz. And the data outside the AI names kept flashing the same split economy signal.

This week has no Fed meeting, but it is not quiet. The FOMC minutes get a fuller read as officials speak. A wave of housing data fills the front half of the week. Retailers report all week and test the consumer. And Friday's flash PMI is the first hard read on the whole economy this month, one week before Jackson Hole.

Here are the five questions that drive the week ahead.

QUESTION 1

Do This Week's Fed Speakers Confirm the Hawks Held Their Line?

Last week's minutes showed several officials wanted to hike in July and agreed to wait only for more data. That patience was conditional. The cool CPI print gave the doves a talking point. This week tells us whether it changed any hawkish minds.

The FOMC minutes land Wednesday. Several officials likely wanted to hike in July and agreed to wait only for more data. That patience was conditional. Jackson Hole on August 27 is where Chair Warsh finally signals direction. The speakers between now and then set the tone he walks into.

What to Watch

Any Fed official repeating the wait and see language from the minutes, or dropping it. Dropping it would mean the conditional patience is gone. Also watch whether the 30 year Treasury holds above 5.20 percent.

QUESTION 2

Does the Flash PMI Confirm Growth or Warn of a Slowdown?

Friday brings the August flash PMI, the composite plus the manufacturing and services breakouts. It is the first real read on the broad economy this month. Every other data point this week is backward looking. This one is not.

A strong composite reading above 50 (indicating economic expansion) would tell the hawks the economy can handle a hike. A weak reading below 50 (indicating contraction) would hand the doves the slowdown argument they have been missing. Coming one week before Jackson Hole, it is the last major growth signal the Fed sees before the conference.

What to Watch

The flash composite PMI against 50 on Friday. Also watch the services number specifically, since services inflation has been the stickiest part of the whole picture.

QUESTION 3

Do the Big Retailers Confirm the Split Consumer?

The consumer has split all summer. Premium spending held up. Lower income households pulled back under higher prices. This week is the biggest test of that split yet. Walmart, Target, Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), and TJX (TJX) all report.

Walmart Walmart (WMT) is the key read on the lower end. Target (TGT) sits in the middle. Home Depot and Lowe's read the housing linked consumer, who has been stuck for over a year. TJX, the discounter, tends to do well exactly when shoppers trade down. Read together, these five names give the clearest consumer picture of the quarter.

What to Watch

Walmart's US same store sales and any guidance on lower income demand. Also watch whether TJX raises guidance, a sign shoppers are trading down in size.

QUESTION 4

Does Housing Confirm the Freeze or Show a Thaw?

Housing has been locked up for over a year. Mortgage rates near 7 percent kept buyers and sellers on the sidelines. This week brings a full slate. Building permits, housing starts, and pending home sales land Tuesday. The MBA mortgage rate and the NAHB builder sentiment index fill in around them.

Any pickup in permits or starts would suggest builders see demand returning. A further drop would confirm the freeze is deepening. Home Depot and Lowe's earnings the same week give the retail read on the same housing linked consumer.

What to Watch

Housing starts and building permits against recent months on Tuesday. Also watch the NAHB builder sentiment index Monday for how builders themselves see demand.

QUESTION 5

Does the AI Trade Hold Its Split After This Week's Earnings?

Last week CoreWeave tested the fear and Super Micro tested the promise. This week extends the read. Analog Devices (ADI), Keysight (KEYS), and Ubiquiti (UBNT) all report. Each is a different slice of the hardware and networking layer beneath the AI buildout.

Intuit (INTU) reports too, a read on how much AI is actually showing up in software revenue rather than just spending. And Deere (DE) reports as a read on the industrial economy. High rates and soft farm income have squeezed demand there for over a year.

What to Watch

Analog Devices and Keysight guidance for any read on chip and test equipment demand tied to AI. Also watch whether Intuit credits AI for real revenue, not just product features.

ALSO ON THE CALENDAR

A few more threads carry into the week.

The NY Empire State manufacturing index Monday and the Philadelphia Fed index Thursday are early regional reads. They often front run the national picture. Industrial production Tuesday tests whether the factory sector is still expanding under the weight of tariffs and higher rates. And the net long term TIC flows data Monday shows whether foreign buyers are still absorbing US debt. That is a quiet but important question. The 30 year yield is sitting at a 19 year high.

Oil inventories return midweek. API crude stocks land Tuesday, with EIA crude and gasoline stocks Wednesday. After a summer of Hormuz driven price swings, any large draw would confirm the supply tightness the market keeps pricing. A build would suggest demand is softening underneath the geopolitical noise.

SETTING UP THE WEEK

Six threads named last week. Five questions carry them into the final stretch before Jackson Hole.

The Fed's internal debate got louder in last week's minutes. This week's speakers show whether the cool CPI print softened any of it. Friday's flash PMI is the last real growth read before the conference. The biggest retailers in the country report all week and put the split consumer story to its hardest test yet. Housing data fills the front half and tells us whether the year long freeze is thawing or deepening. And a fresh round of chip and hardware earnings extends the AI trade's split between the names that spend and the names that sell.

By Friday, the market will have a fuller picture of prices, growth, the consumer, and the AI buildout. It all lands one week before Chair Warsh steps up at Jackson Hole. This is the week the questions sharpen. Next week is where they finally get answered.
